Sweet Musings - Check her out!

A million thank you's are not enough for the amount of amazing work my cousin Michelle has done in helping me "brand" my business. Her endless knowledge and beautiful sketches, as well as taking my vision for a logo and having it "come to life", well words can't describe the gratitude I have for her.

If you like what you see, feel free to follow her blog, it truly is an amazing assortment of art and life! So get to following - you know you want to!

First Order = Signed, Sealed, Delivered!

Last week we received our first "official" order! To say I was excited was beyond words.

A co-worker of mine, Sandy, requested that I make her "a giant cupcake that I can eat all to myself" She has repeatedly told that "this is your gift child, and you need to take it and run with it". So I did. Her two requests were chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting, didn't matter how it was decorated.

With Easter coming around the corner, I decided to make her a basket of flowers. I started with the base and used the basket-weaving technique on the bottom, then added a star border, and rope piping at the top:

Once the base was complete, it was time to move onto the top. Earlier in the week, I made flowers from royal icing in a blue color, so I made pink and purple icing to add accent flowers. I piped grass along the edges, above the rope as part of the base of the cake. Next I used a star tip to add pink and purple flowers. Then placed the royal icing flowers, added the centers to the flowers and added more grass :)

The finished product took a train ride from my house into the city where it was delivered to Sandy this morning! I hope she enjoys the giant cupcake as much as I did making it!

Looking forward to sharing more photos and stories with you!

Basic Cake Decorating = Success!

Last Saturday, we finished our last class for the basics! I loved the classes and I'm looking forward to taking many more.

We had to do the same in this class - bring an iced cake which we would decorate. We learned:

  • Zig-zag borders

  • Ruffle borders

  • Drop lines

  • Bachelor button flowers

  • Royal Icing flowers

  • Basketweaving

  • "Mums"

  • How to make figures (we used clowns - CREEPY!!!)

  • Paint icing

It was an awesome class and Steph and I both had a lot of fun doing it! I can't wait to apply the techniques to future products!

Basic Cake Decorating: 1st Class

On Saturday, I attended the first of three cake decorating classes. Overly excited does not even describe it. Since this first class was a basic introductory class, we really went over what we were going to be learning, we got our list of materials that we needed (along with a 10% discount YEAH!), and did some basic work with standard decorating tips - #16 and #21. (Note: Check out Wilton's Cake Decorating book http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-902-904-Decorating-Cakes-Book/dp/B0006ZR1L0) The pictures are amazing and it makes me want to bake and decorate cakes all day long. Like seriously. The instructor is also very good - she's "real" in what she says and her advice. I loved listening to her and forgot a notebook (bad I know, but we weren't given our supplies list til that day), and wrote all over the papers they handed out. To do for this week:

  • Make 20 parchment bags

  • Make 2 cakes (one for me, one for Steph)

  • Make 6 batches of buttercream icing (2 stiff, 2 medium, 2 thin)

  • Practice, practice, practice

  • Pack supplies bag and organize it :)

This week we will be doing a floral spray cake - stay tuned for pictures!

Just claiming my name :)

I know it's a bit premature and not even sure if this will be the name, but in the hopes and dreams I have for owning my own place, I'm claiming some cyber space names. So stayed tuned because hopefully some day soon there will be Klicious Cupcakery and Cafe!
