Order up: Happy Birthday Chino!

The order:

1 Jumbo Vanilla cupcake with cream cheese frosting

Decorated in a New York Yankees theme.

Christine contacted me once she saw a post about Angie's cupcakes! She told me she'd like a jumbo cupcake made for her husband's birthday and that he is a Yankees fan. How cool. So I started thinking up ideas and asked her what she thought if we did the logo on the top part of the cupcake, with a happy birthday message, then pinstripes around the bottom of the cupcake with a baseball and glove border. She loved it.

So into the kitchen we go! The cake was baked on Sunday morning and everytime I make a jumbo cupcake, I am amazed at how much batter is really needed. Once the cake was done, it was set to cool off. Then it was time to make the icing - cream cheese frosting, YUM!

The cake was cool and it was time to assemble. The inside of the cupcake was filled with chocolate buttercream with chocolate chips.

Then a ring of frosing was piped around so when the top of the cupcake was applied, the filling wouldn't leak out the sides. (Little fun fact!) Alas, we put the cupcake together:

Once the cupcake was frosted and set in the fridge for a few minutes - we're learning that humidity and a warm kitchen are not icing friendly :) Once chilled, the decorating begins! The baseballs were made of white chocolate with red icing piped as the strings, the gloves were pre-made candies from Wilton. The logo of the Yankees was traced onto the top of the cupcake, then the inside was piped using the star tip. The same tip was used to place the stripes along the bottom of the cake.

Happy Birthday Chino was added in red icing and the baseball borders were applied:

The final product - a giant cupcake fit for a Yankees fan!

Happy Birthday Chino - we hope you enjoyed every bite...hopefully while watching some baseball!

Order up: Princess Brianna's 1st Birthday!

The Order:

25 vanilla cupcakes with buttercream icing

25 chocolate cupcakes with buttercream icing

Decorated in Princess theme

About 2 weeks ago, Dawn contacted me to make cupcakes for her daughter's first birthday party. Dawn found out about us from Erica - we made her son's first birthday cucpakes - the infamous Sesame Street characters, featured here: http://kliciouscupcakes.blogspot.com/2011/05/order-up-stephens-first-birthday.html

Dawn and I were talking back and forth over the phone and email - she told me the theme of the party was Princess theme and my mind went into overdrive! Pink, purple, princess crowns, wands, a castle!

Friday night, it was right back into the kitchen to get to baking! Steph came over to help out - we made crowns using white chocolate, milk chocolate, a crown candy mold, and pink "pearls". We also used ice cream cones - regular and sugar to make the peaks of the castles. They were rolled in white chocolate. Saturday morning, it was early to rise! Buttercreams were made and placed in the fridge - after being colored pink and purple of course! About an hour before it was time to head off for the delivery, the cupcakes were frosted, all the items were packed up and we were out the door.

Once we arrived at the location of the party, we walked through the door into a princess wonderland! Dawn really did a wonderful job of decorating. We even got to meet the little princess herself. We setup a table and quickly went to work. We placed the cupcakes along the back to make the castle wall - putting the ice cream cones in order. Once that was done, Steph had the idea of making the cupcakes in the shape of a 'B' and '1' - which was great! Once they were placed in line, we started adding all of the details to each cupcake - crowns, chocolate B and number 1's that were made of chocolate and coated with white pearls. The end result was fit for a princess!

All in all - these were so fun to make! We learned a few lessons along the way as well - start car 10 minutes before leaving when bringing buttercream out to the car, make sure you have napkins, plastic gloves and check your nerves at the door!

Happy 1st Birthday Princess Brianna and I hope you had a wonderful party!

Party Time! Girl Scout Decorating Party

Party Time! Girl Scout Decorating Party!

When: Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Where: Chesnut Hill Community Center

For Who: Val's girl scout troop

A few months ago, Steph, Michelle and I were brainstorming ideas of different services/cool things to do with the cupcakes. We came up with a few ideas and decided to add them to our services list! The one that we all agreed upon was a cupcake decorating party. Michelle was talking with her co-worker Val about our ideas and decided that she wanted to book a party for her girl scouts troop.

It was lightining fast and before I knew it, Saturday May 14th, we were going to be entertaining (little did we know we would be the ones ultimately entertained) a group of lovely little girls!

The night before, of course was the baking frenzy! We made plain chocolate cupcakes, plain vanilla cupcakes and chocolate chip vanilla cupcakes. As a special treat, we made our Minty Girl Scout cupcakes for each girl to have! Steph and I packed up the truck and headed to a Chestnut Hill community center!

Once we arrived, we met Val and her 2 daughters who helped us setup - SO nice to have help! After the tables were set with about 30 different types of sprinkles, cookies, and candies, the girls started to arrive. Upon arrival, each one got to pick out an apron and begin their traditions of starting an activity - I believe they are required to say their pledge and are given instructions from their leaders. Val really has a way with the girls to have them sit in a circle on focus! I was even invited to join in to explain what they would be doing - it was cute being introduced as "Miss Kelli from Klicious Cupcakes". So awesome!

Once the instructions were give, I frosted a cupcake for each girl and off they went putting sprinkles, candies, cookies, umbrellas, upon their cupcakes!

Once that calmed down, each girl was able to visit a station to learn and frost their own cupcake! They REALLY liked that...and so did I!

It was so nice to stand back and actually see the girls creativity at work. Sometimes as adults, we work towards making sure that everything sits perfectly...where as the girls were adding what they liked, not worrying about the colors clashing, etc. They have some talent!!

It definitely put a smile on my face watching the excitement on their faces and the energy that was swirling around the room!

At the end of the party, each girl was able to go home with 5 cupcakes! As we were packing up, I couldn't do anything but smile as each girl was telling their parents how much fun they had and how they wanted to do it again!

I definitely think this was a success!

Some of you may have seen on Facebook that we are currently in the top 3 of a recipe contest for our Fluffy Elvis contest...if you haven't - LIKE us on Facebook. NOW. GO!

Anywho, one day I was bored at work so I did a little google search and came across this blog: http://www.cakesbythecupblog.com/ . I saw that they were running a cupcake recipe contest to be published in a book series! How cool right?

So I looked over our available cupcakes and decide to submit the Fluffy Elvis. For those who don't know this cupcake is a banana cake, with delicious creamy peanut butter filling, topped with a marshmellow fluff frosting. I know right?!? Makes me want to run home and make a batch of them!

So I submitted the recipe and on Friday of last week, got the confirmation email that we're in the top 3! Woooohoooo! The smile couldn't be wiped off my face with a brillo pad! The winner will be announced on June 30th - which is 8 days away ACK! But it is being judged by Amazon.com - how freakin cool right?!?! Here's the post here with the name in black and white! http://www.cakesbythecupblog.com/?p=301

Anyway, the other 2 recipes in the contest are Sweet Peach Tea and Chocolate Meringue. Be honest, which one would you choose to win?

Order up: Suprise Party Cupcakes!

The order:

12 Reese's Love

12 Strawberries and Champagne

12 Red Velvet

One of Steph's friends, Regina sent us a request to make cupcakes for her sister's suprise party - of course we were in! The order was due for pick up on Saturday, June 25th. Again, I get so excited to make cupcakes! Into the kitchen we go again - what a baking whirlwind! Friday night, the cupcakes were baked and set to cool. After rising from some good sleep on Saturday morning, tending to the 4 legged monster, it was back into the kitchen.

I like to make the icing fresh right before the cupcakes are frosted, and I think I still has some sleepies in my eyes because I was trying to catch my coordination and it wasn't working! First batch of icing was the strawberries and champagne - which I started with because I like to give that icing time to "set" since it does contain fresh fruit. Once that was complete, it was time to dip the strawberries.

Next up was the Reese's Love - this is temptation in a piping bag! I have a love affair with peanut butter - I'd probably eat it everyday if I could...but today it was going right onto these pretty little cupcakes! Once they were done and safely resting in their little box, it was time to tackle the cream cheese frosting for the Red Velvet. I know - I think the same thing - like how hard can it be to make cream cheese frosting? Exactly - it's the simple ones that I sometimes struggle with - I find myself constantly bringing out the recipe for them to make sure I "get it right" because who wants to screw up the simple ones? And when it was done, it was done right :)

Hello little Red Velvet!

This was one order, that thankfully after the Friday incident, I was glad was being picked up! Regina text me when she was on her way - I gathered up the little boxes and had them all ready to go!

Thank you Regina for letting us make these treats for your party and wishing your sister a very Happy Suprise Birthday!

Order up: Shannon's Vacation!

The Order:
12 Reese's Love
12 Vanilla with chocolate buttercream

My cousin Shannon got in touch with me to ask if I'd make her cupcakes to take away on her vacation and for Father's Day! This made order #3 for last weekend - and I was happy to do it! The week before, we were at our family reunion and once Shannon tasted the Reese's Love, she knew that's what she wanted.

Thursday night was a baking frenzy since she needed the cupcakes by 7 PM on Friday as they were packing up for their drive to North Carolina! Once the cupcakes were baked, they were set to cool overnight. Once my "real" job was done on Friday, maybe even leaving a little earlier *wink wink*, the frosting was made, cupcakes were iced and placed in their little container to make their trek from Philly to North Carolina! Took them to Shannon's house just in time for their caravan to take off!

Hope you have a wonderful, relaxing vacation Micklos family...and enjoy those cupcakes!

Order up: More cupcakes for Ang!

The Order:

One Dozen vanilla cupcakes with buttercream icing, decorated girly!

Once again, Ang couldn't resist the cupcakes! She contacted me in the week asking if I could make her cupcakes for Friday night, and how could I say no? So into the kitchen I went on Thursday night to prep the 2 orders for Friday.

As I got ready to make the order, I decided to add some pink food dye to the batter, and also threw in some chocolate chips! YUM. The next morning, the cupcakes were frosted, sugar flowers adorned, and packaged up and ready to take a train ride to the city to meet Gida at work.

Hi pretty cupcakes!

I pack my bags, walk to the train station, take the 27 minute train ride from my house to Suburban Station. I get off the train, walk to 17th and Market. This is where the morning went from smooth to "WTF" in a matter of moments.

One tidbit of info? I was going to 17th and Sansom to drop the cupcakes off. That is 2 blocks from where I was. Being the good citizen that I am, I wait until the light turns green and begin to cross. As I am about 4 steps from the sidewalk, I look up and see a biker riding down 17th...and in slow motion (well it was pretty fast, but I felt like I watched it in slow motion) I see him make a sharp turn onto Market street and he made contact with my hand.

BAM. Cupcakes are a man down. Immediately my inner gremlin takes a hold of me, of course because he didn't stop, and a few explicits fly out of my mouth. Yes there was an F bomb dropped, in between "you've gotta be" and "kidding me". A wonderful lady came up to ask if I was alright, and I told her I was thank God. It just made me want to choke the guy. It wasn't my finest moment, but I digress.

Next thought. OMG the cupcakes!! So I look down and the box is tipped over. My heart sank. I gently picked the box up, walked over to a bench and fixed them as best I could. Lesson learned: Always, always, ALWAYS carry an extra pipping bag with icing with you. The damage wasn't too bad, but I felt terrible. Here's an after shot...

Well Ang, this batch is on me and I hope they were enjoyed by you and the birthday girl!!!

Order up: Morgan's 2nd Birthday!

The Order:
2 Dozen chocolate chip with vanilla butter cream, decorated in Party Girl theme

I can't help it - every time I get to make an order for a girl's birthday, it makes me so excited! I love pinks, purples, ribbons, bows, crowns, etc. So when Megan asked me to make Morgan's cupcakes, it was a no-brainer, I was in!

I made our yellow chocolate chip cupcakes, 2 batches of buttercream icing (one colored pink). I waited until we arrived at the party to frost the cupcakes because it was so stinking hot out that I didn't want the icing to melt. Got to bounce university, Rich was along for the ride this time and he even helped swirl some icing onto the cupcakes! We did pink swirls in the center, white stars outlining the outside, topped with some girlie colored sprinkles!

12 of the cupcakes were arranged in the number "2", the others were placed on a platter to await being eaten!

I got a text from Megan later in the day that made me smile - it said - "Amazing thx soo much". It's so good to hear feedback and when people enjoy them, it gives me an even bigger boost!

Happy Birthday Little Miss - hope you enjoyed all the bouncing around!

Order Up: Princess Ang's Birthday!

The Order:

1 Dozen Take Pride cupcakes

Little background? I knew Ang was awesome the night we had a "family" dinner, and her and Gida showed up and told us how the story of how they brought brownie bites because Ang didn't have enough time to make brownies...and Gida told her to just bring the box over and make them at my house! Too cute.

I digress. A month before her actual birthday, Ang told me that she wanted "gay" cupcakes for her birthday - not a problem at all! She's a girl after my own heart - countdowns to her birthday, week long celebrations, and making it well known it's her time! Love it.

I feel like I've said it on almost every post, but I loved making these cupcakes! Changing the batter to be different colors to look like a rainbow - so fun!

Once they were done, they were frosted with vanilla frosting, topped with rainbow "jimmies" and packaged up to go! They survived a septa train ride, cab ride to the Hotel Palomar, and transport by Geeds to the birthday girl!

Happy Birthday Princess Ang - hope you enjoyed your "gay" cupcakes!

Order Up: Brendan's Graduation!

The Order:

1 Dozen basic chocolate

1 Dozen basic vanilla

Again, another order for Erin. She's the best :)

When talking about Ava's cupcakes, she also mentioned that she would need cupcakes for Brendan's graduation. No problemo...but left me wondering - "OMG I remember when I first met Erin and Brendan was still using a bottle and in diapers - CHRIST I feel old!" Once I got past the shock of that it was onto the designs and baking!

As we talked, it was discussed that they are considered "ducks"...which is awesome because I found the perfect little cucpake toppers - little yellow duckies and little graduation duckies! So again, into the kitchen we went!

Since these were pretty simple, I used yellow and orange cupcake wrappers, frosted with white icing and some yellow sprinkles, then the little ducks went on top!

There was a little drama as I was getting ready to leave, I realized I couldn't find my extra roll of polka dot ribbon to wrap around, so I added pretty ribbon that I had around the house. Also, one tray of cupcakes almost took a turn for the worst...as I was carrying them to the table, they almost slipped right out of my hand - MAN DOWN - but I was able to save it, touch some of them up and add more sprinkles and get them out the door! So glad it wasn't a huge disaster.

Brendan, hope you had a 'quacking' good time at graduation!

Erin, hope you didn't cry too much!

Order Up: Ava's School Birthday

The order:
1 Dozen Vanilla basic
1 Dozen Chocolate basic

My good friend and old co-worker Erin contacted me to see if we would be available to make cupcakes for Ava's birthday...at first I was a little confuzzled. You see, Ava's birthday isn't until July 2nd. Found out that her school allows the kids with summer birthday to celebrate before the end of the school year - how cool is that!?!?

So away we go into the kitchen. Her theme for her birthday party is going to be a tropical theme! Excitement rises and my mind starts going all over. Knowing that Ava is a girly girl it was decided to use tropical umbrellas and drink straws with palm trees and monkeys, pink and yellow cupcake wrappers, also some pink and yellow sprinkles!

They turned out so adorable!

So happy early birthday to you Ms. Ava - hope you and your class enjoyed your cupcakes!

Order up! Kate's Graduation Party

Order up: Kate's Graduation Party

The order:

  • 1 Dozen Vanilla basic

  • 1 Dozen Chocoalte basic

  • 3 Basic Vanilla with chocolate icing

  • 9 Strawberries and Champagne

  • 6 Reese's Love

  • 6 Minty Girl Scouts

  • 6 Weezy's Carrot Cake

  • 6 Fluffy Elvis

Rose, Kate's mom, was the first official email that we received through the website, right after launch wanting to place an order for Kate's graduation from Penn State. To say we were honored is an understatement! Since this was in early April, we had time to wait to plan what we would be doing, how to be decorated, etc. Last week we finalized the order above, and got down to baking on Saturday.

First up, I made the Weezy's Carrot Cake since that took time to prep the ingredients, once they hit the oven, next up were the Fluffy Elvis! After that was complete, it was time to make vanilla and chocolate to finish out the baking. The house still smells yummy today from all the aroma's of baking!
As the cupcakes cooled, it was time to prep the icings and decorations. Since there were premium cupcakes being made, we let those have the standard decorating. On the basics, we added blue sprinkles, to both the chocolate and vanilla, we added graduation duckies! So adorable.

Once all the cupcakes were frosted and decorations adorned, they werere boxed up to be delivered.

Since delivery was in Jersey, I decided to make the delivery myself, AKA Steph was on vacation and since Winston doesn't have his driver's license or thumbs, it was all me! This is about all Winston contributed during the baking:

Once I arrived at Rose's house, Kate and her friend were nice enough to help me unload the cupcakes and before I even got in the door, people were already staking claim to which one they wanted! It was so nice to see Rose and the family and actually get to display my cupcakes :) I truly loved baking this order!

Congratulations Kate and best of luck to you on all your future endeavors!
